Here’s another small excerpt from the dating memoir I’ve been working on.
This is about the quiet unravelling of a long love story; how something can break slowly, invisibly, and then, all at once.
Lyrical Interlude: All At Once
It happened slowly and then all at once.
The facade had gradually cracked over time; the hurt, pain, lies, neglect, and anger had seeped into our relationship like cracks in glass.
We began with a pristine mirror, but over time, we dropped it repeatedly, leaving it filled with cracks resembling spiderwebs.
I used to be able to look in our mirror and see our reflections staring back: us, smiling together and looking ahead at our future…
…but then I saw us, covered by all those splintery cracks. I could barely make out our faces. There was too much damage. The mirror was shattered. The illusion was gone.
I still love you.
I always will.
But I’ve fallen out of love with you.
It happened slowly. And then all at once.
If you’ve ever loved someone long after it stopped working, this one’s for you.
I’ll share more pieces from the memoir soon; subscribe if you’d like to walk with me.
